Going Out With a Bang! Update:
• Consistently achieve my weekly goals (um…close)
• Have a “Tigger Attitude” at work (I’d say yep!)
• Increase intensity on one machine (treadmill, elliptical, or stair stepper) bi-weekly (increased on the treadmill)
• Only drink one cup of coffee a day (just one. Promise)

Catching Up

Another long day. Yesterday was, too. It’s month end, so that should end tomorrow, but I’m not liking not having much time to spend relaxing or with Anna or on exercise. And I’ve missed posting here and visiting all of my blogs. But I did most of my blog visits while during mini breaks at work (waiting for reports to print, etc…). In addition to that, since I was so busy yesterday, I didn’t have time to work out. So, I need to do extra the rest of the week. And I made up for a lot of that today. I did an extra time on the elliptical, treadmill, and stairmaster. Now, I’m all caught up on the treadmill, I’ll be caught up on the stairmaster tomorrow, but will probably take all week to get caught up on the elliptical (I just can’t take an extra 30 minutes to catch up!). Anna and I went on a short 1-mile walk on Saturday, but I’m not going to count that until I get a 2-miler in. All-in-all, it’s been a good start of my week (eating well, at least), and I know it’ll get even better!

Date Night

Date night was great. My boss let me leave an hour early so that I could surprise Anna at work. So, I picked her up, and we were on our way to have pho. But then we both said that we didn’t really want pho. Instead? Yeah, we shared popcorn and an ICEE while watching Surrogates. The movie was okay (lots to think about in terms of faith and spirituality), and “dinner” wasn’t healthy. That being said, we shared a medium (I used to demand that we got a Large—and maybe a refill, too!). So I didn’t over eat. A win. After the movie, we went to a local frozen yogurt place and shared a small original with sliced almonds and diced peaches. So good. I love sharing food with Anna.

The DVD workouts was great this week, but it feels like I cheated a little bit (when I said two workouts, I didn’t know that each DVD consisted of 3 workouts). So this time, when I say it’s a workout, I mean that it’s for the length of the DVD, so about 3 “sessions” per workout. Does that make sense?

Let the Bloodletting Begin!



I survived. I thrived. It went really well! Not only did I donate the blood really quickly (as I always do—I have “juicy” veins and I do drink a lot of water), but I also did have a great check-in. My pulse? 52. My Blood Pressure? 102/60. Not bad!! (Keep in mind that I've never been on any kind of medication for my health--other than muscle relaxants once).

This was a pretty easy day for exercise. In fact, this week, I have not walked once. I plan on doing one and my workout videos tomorrow, promise.

And Anna and I are having our date night tomorrow, since we had friends over for dinner (Crab Cakes; Baby Greens Salad; Tomato, Pepper, and Avocado Salad; and Baked Sweet Potato Fries—yummy).

The Hot 100

Steve mentioned that as of today, we have 100 days left of 2009. While my 2009 was way better than 2008, I’m thinking that a big push to end the year would be great! So, here are my Official The Hot 100 – Going Out With a Bang! Goals:

As I’ve noted in previous posts, I’ve been super busy at work. Today, I got into the office at 5:30 am and I didn’t leave until after 8 pm. But I got a lot done! I’m now down to 24 follow-ups and most of them are little things that I have to finish.

And, it may be a couple of days late, but I did schedule my physical. I was able to schedule it for Monday! I’m pretty excited about it, and will certainly report on what I hear.

Tomorrow will be interesting, since I’ll be donating blood. I know that both Steve and Ehren had some complications donating blood. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Another Long Day

These seem to be the norm now. I spent extra time at work and at home working on work. I now am down to 35 follow-ups (including all of the emails from today), and I’m hoping that I can cut that down to below 20 by the end of tomorrow. Tonight was the only night that I’ll be able to stay at work late. We are having my dad over for dinner tomorrow; we have couple’s small group on Wednesday; and we’re having some friends over on Thursday. There’s still Friday, but if Anna and I are going to have our date night, we’ll have to do it then. So, I already know it’s going to be a tough week, but at least I know that ahead of time. And I should be able to succeed in spite of that. If I can’t, then how will I ever get through Q4 and the Holidays?

This was a successful day! Not work (my follow-ups creeped up to 44!), but at home. We have my niece and nephew, and we took them for a walk. I was able to get my walk in, and they were able to play at the park with Anna. Then we got them dinner and we walked back home. So fun! They’re both to bed now, and Anna and I get to spend some time together. I sure do thank God for putting Anna and I together—she means so much to me!

On my way home (I left work early to meet my sis-in-law at our house to get the kids), I had to stop by Micky-D’s to pick up two happy meals (“mom’s” request). How did I win? How did I beat that MegaDeathTrap? I didn’t buy anything for myself. I was tempted—a little. I could have bought some Chicken McNuggets, or a McDouble, or anything. But I didn’t. Instead, I said, “2 Happy Meals, please.” And that’s a win. A wig win.

And, to top it all off, I completed ALL my goals!

I don’t think I’m going to change much. It seemed to work pretty well this week. But I’d like to spend more time with Anna, hence the exercise goal.

Late Day

Late day at work. I got into the office at 6:45 this morning. I left at 7:15 this evening. I was at my desk for all that time other than to get copies, water, use the bathroom, and workout in the gym for an hour. Long day. And I’m still not even caught up—still 33 follow-ups! It’s so funny how I never learn. I come in to work all refreshed, thinking that I’ll be able to get caught up. Why do I forget that new requests and issues come in throughout the day? No matter. I love my job. I love helping my clients out. I just despise leaving work and not completing everything—I don’t like coming into work with things already on my plate. Perhaps I’ll be able to buckle down and clear my plate tomorrow (though I’ll only be there until 2 because Anna and I are playing “family” this weekend: we’re babysitting one of our nieces and nephews all for Saturday and Sunday night). We’ll see. Regardless, I’ll certainly have to have a good attitude.

Date Night

Tonight, Anna treated me to a night out for dinner.  We went to a sushi place in Bellevue that totally fit my requirements:  good, fast, and cheap!  It was pretty tasty.  Lots of rolls (we prefer the nigiri, but that's okay); lot's of cheap rolls.  Like $2 a plate...  Then we got home, I went for my walk, and we ate dessert with some friends at a local frozen yogurt place--and Anna and I split a small.  Good night.  Very good night.

New Blogger on a Journey

This probably won't be very long, but a few weeks ago, South Beach Steve posted a challenge to highlight a blog on our own site.  I never completed that challenge.  I just couldn't find one that I really wanted to.  Please don't get me wrong.  I really do appreciate many blogs (see my list to the right).  And there are more that I visit on a regular basis.  That being said, I finally found one that I'd love to celebrate.  It's called Shelli Belly.  Shelli's blog is pretty inspiring, and it's only been a week!  She's a Christian, and her determination is awesome.  Over the last 3 years she's almost escaped a mountain of debt.  And now she's putting that drive into escaping a mountain of weight.  I wish her the best on her journey and will be praying for her.  I hope you all go visit her blog and encourage her--it's scary to put yourself out there on the internet.

"Celebration" Planned for 300

No, I'm not talking about the movie 300 (however good that was).  I'm talking about what I'll do to celebrate getting back into to 200 for the first time in 5 years (though that was really only a visit, as I quickly jumped back up!).  I've thought about it for a while, and although I know that I said I wasn't going to do anything.  Well, in my normal, mostly boring way, I decided I'd get a physical.  That's right.  I'll get the second, maybe third physical of my life.  The good news is that the all the previous times I had my physical, there were no issues.  No high blood pressure, no diabetes risk.  Nothing.  So I'm excited to see what they say this time.  But I don't think I'll schedule it until I really do get under 300.  So, next Monday, look for a post that says that I've scheduled my doctor's visit.

I'm trying something new this week.  Ever since June, I've weighed myself after getting back from the farm.  I kinda feel like that's cheating (since I'm using the 4 hour of exercise to lower my weight before I officially weigh-in).  But we won't be working on the farm forever (the work share ends last week of October or first week of November, I'm not sure...), and I knew that I had a pretty successful week, so I would use this week to make to switch to weighing in before the farm now.  It's tempting to use my after farm weight, though.  I had to check out what it would have been , and it would have been 295.8!  Yikes!  Tempting, but I'm happy with where I am now, so I decided to use the pre-farm weight.  And now, if I miss a week of the farm, things aren't completely sunk.

Yay for progress!  I'm not officially 1/2 way there!  And next week is WILL be under 300!  for the first time in at least 5 years.  I'm getting pretty stoked about that!

Weak Ending

I had great, high expectations for wrapping up this weekend: get all my follow-ups at work done; getting my exercise at work done in the morning; going on a nice walk; getting to sleep early.  Nothing worked.  It was a good day, but not a strong ending to a short week.  I didn't get my walk in.  I didn't even touch the jump rope all week (I may actually eliminate this, as I need to pull out my car to jump rope, and it's tough to incorporate into my routine).  And I didn't build up to the right amount of planks 1- 90 second planks.  I'm super thrilled that I was able to pack so much into my 4 days at work.  And I'm loving the treadmill--though it's tough.

One happy development of my journey so far has been my knees.  It used to be that when I walked up the stairs, I would hear the cartilage in my knees rub.  It was kinda gross.  Now?  Nothing.  Silence.  Awesome!  Talk about motivation to continue.

And I'm thinking I'll be pretty good with my weigh-in tomorrow.  Now, back on track--I hope!

God's Blessing to you all!

Busy (good) Month

The summer is usually pretty busy, what, with vacations, family reunions, etc.  And August is usually the worst.  So Anna and I were looking forward to having a calm September.  Not gonna happen.  This week, for example, consists of our Portland trip (Sat-Mon), my wife's FIG group (Tues), couple's small group (Wed), and dinner with in-laws (Thurs).  Those are all great things.  Love them.  And tonight was a blast!  We had my mom (actually my mother-in-law, but I cal her my mom, since my biological one passed away in 08) and my wife's cousin over for dinner.  Anna planned the meal and I executed it: Chicken Piccata, Mashed Sweet Potato w/ Caramelized Onions, Green Beans w/ Chinese Sausage and Diced Jalapenos, Sliced Heirloom Tomatoes, and Crusty Bread.  So delicious!  And mostly healthy.  And Anna's cousin, Jen, was great to see.  She lives in DC, and we haven't seen her for a while.  So it was/will be a late night of catching up...

We're both (Anna and I) looking forward to tomorrow night, when we'll be able to relax.  Maybe.  Of course, I know I won't be able to meet all my goals (no way I'll be able to jump rope for 20 minutes!).

Fun with Friends













Tonight was a fun night.  Anna and I hosted our friends at our house.  Well, actually Anna's friends (at first).  The four young ladies you see in the picture were in a small group during college and they've stayed friends in the years since.  And all of us guys have been added along the way.  So, while they started as Anna's friends, they've grown to be my friends as well!

We had great food, lots of laughs, and deep conversations.  About marriage.  Weddings.  Faith.  Consumerism. Communism.  Mars Hill (in Grand Rapids, Michigan).  So many different conversations.  I feel really blessed to have so many Godly people in my life (both in my immediate community and in my blogging community, with both Steve and Ehren being particular blessings).  I thank God every day for the support around me.

Earlier this weekend, I did a quick post about my weight gain.  I thought I had gained 0.8 pounds.  But then, I went to upload the picture that I took on Saturday morning.  I was wrong.  Good thing I take pictures of the scale--I can't remember things at 5:00 in the morning... :)  I'm still not happy with GAINING 0.2 pounds, but I'm sure that's water weight.  You see, I usually weight myself after I'm done with the farm, but this week, I couldn't do that, as we were leaving for our weekend trip.  I'm really not happy, but I know with my new routine and goals for the week, I should pull out a successful week!

Wrap Up

This week was pretty good for me.  I mean, I'll see where I am with my weigh-in tomorrow morning (which I'm not too positive about) but for the most part?  Yeah, good week.  I went on more walks.  I tried a longer route (which I loved).  I added the treadmill to my workout.  I did a 90 second plank!  On top of that, I came up with a new menu for my work eating.  I went on a double date with Anna (of course!) and our friends Chongsun & Laura to a Seattle Eritrean Restaurant--yummo!  Yeah, good week...I hope!

As you can see, I've added in the treadmill and I've lowered my calf raises and sit-ups.  I'm trying to boost my weight loss again (all with the idea that I won't see a loss tomorrow).  Looking back at my journey, I'm a little disappointed that I got lazy.  What I mean by that is that when I first started, I was doing 50 minutes on the elliptical.  Now?  25.  Yikes!  But at least I'm adding in the treadmill.  And before, I wasn't doing ANY of the other things: the walks, the jumping rope, the planks, and all the rest.  So maybe it's not an entire loss...

How I'll Celebrate (updated)

I forgot to add in one more part of my workout routine I addded!  (See below.)

I was talking with my best friend/brother the other day and told him that I was approaching the 300 mark.  He asked what I was going to do to celebrate/reward myself for reaching that milestone.  At first, I said, "Buffet!"  But that was a joke.  I'm serious!  It was...you gotta believe me!  :)  But then I really started thinking about it.  And you know what?  I don't think I'm going to do a dang thing.  Because, seriously, what is there to celebrate? 

"I'm 1/2 way there!"  But I'm not there yet.  There's nothing to celebrate.

"I'm under 300!"  Yeah, but why should I have EVER been over 300?  That's like rewarding a dog for not peeing on the carpet.  I mean, come on--he's not supposed to do that anyways!!  I shouldn't get a reward for being less fat.  I'm not trying to be hard on myself, I'm just trying not to relax.  You know?

I don't think I'll even try to do something big when I hit 240.  That's where I should be.  A celebration would be fun, but I really don't think I'll deserve a reward.  That's not why I'm doing this.  Being healthy will be my reward.  Living longer will be my reward.  Giving my hot wife a hot husband will be my reward. 

But really?  I'll still try to convince Anna to let me buy something while we're down in Portland, Or. this weekend.

Spending Time With my Wife

I've been feeling pretty off for a little while.  I feel like my work and exercise has gotten in the way of my relationship with Anna.  Not a lot, mind you, but I feel like I've been pushing her back in my priorities.  I know it's important to do well at work.  And I know there's a reason for my keeping on track with my exercise.  And I know that Anna supports me in all that.  But sill, I feel like I'm not giving her enough quality time; not enough R&R with her.  Granted, one of the reasons I got in this predicament is because of my love for R&R, but there needs to be balance.  And I've never been very good with balance.  I'm an all or nothing kinda guy.  That's why I can't have junk food in my house (I'll eat all of it.  At once.).  That's why I don't really drink (too many times of too much--plus all the Calories!!).  But there are some things that can't be all or nothing.  And Anna's one of them.

So, while I worked late at the office today, I did pick up food for us on the way home and spend the evening with Anna tonight.  As a result, though, I didn't finish my exercise of going on my walk or jumping rope.  That makes for more work the next two days.  But that's fine (and if I don't complete my goals, I'll live).  It also emphasizes the need for me to get my butt out of bed and go on my walks in the morning.  This will ensure I have more time to spend with the love of my life. 

On another note, I'm pretty confident that I'll probably gain this week.  I don't want to, but I'm also not going to kill myself trying to hit a certain mark.  This journey has always been about becoming healthy.  Losing weight is just one arm of the quest (albeit a vital one).  SO it seems to me that if I'm living in an unhealthy way just to reach a lower number on the scale, I'm defeating myself.  Of course, I want both to happen (lose weight and be healthy), but doesn't happen all the time.  Even if it does happen 99% of the time.  Right?  Not too much to worry about.

New Weekday Eating Plan

So, for the first five months of my journey, I've been doing a lot of the same eating at work (with too many interruptions): oatmeal, yogurt, and an Eating Right frozen meal. But I'm cheap. And Safeway stopped having them on sale. They used to be $2 each, but now they're $3 each. That's how cheap I am--I'm not willing to pay more for my meals (at work). :) So, I have a new menu:

7 am: whole wheat English muffin with Super Duper Walnut Butter ~$1.00; 210 Calories
10 am: 2/3 cup fat free plain yogurt with sprinkling of crystal light and 5 drops of stetvia concentrate ~ $0.50; 81 Calories
1 pm: 1/2 cup quick oats, 1 tbsp cheese, 3 oz taco turkey ~$1.00; 295 Calories
3 pm: banana $0.25; 100 Calories

Total Cost for work food: $2.75.
Total Calories for work food: about 686
Not bad!  I think.  Is that enough food?  Or should I eat more??
